About the Role:

Reporting to the Head of Editorial, the Deputy Editor will oversee top-editing of Reader’s Digest’s flagship magazine, collaboratively drive cross-surface content projects, liaise with marketing and advertising on branded/native content initiatives and partner with the Head of Editorial, Deputy Digital editor and Social Lead to create content experiences that move the brand forward. As Reader’s Digest evolves, we’re looking for a candidate that balances creativity, rigor and resourcefulness.

Location:

This position will need to come into the New York office on a hybrid basis.

Salary:

$90,000-100,000

About you:

You’re a dynamic senior project leader, editor and creator with the collaborative communication style necessary to break down silos between creative teams and work toward a common purpose: producing quality, on-brand content.

You have a deep background in editing and feel comfortable working with writers and editors at all levels and getting deep into reported and first-person copy in print, on digital surfaces and on social.
You have demonstrated experience finding the synergy between strong editorial storytelling and market needs to create content that drives cross-surface success. (You also have a sense of visual storytelling and may also have been a part of visual or video content production in the past.)

A person who leads by example, you inspire and guide your colleagues with your ability to see an idea through from inception to execution, making sure all the right stakeholders are brought along throughout the process.

You’re interested in what’s happening in the world and how to provide the right stories to our audience in valuable, relevant and entertaining ways.

Deeply curious, you’re a reader, watcher and consumer of content, enabling you to spot opportunities and trends. As Reader’s Digest includes regular reprints from other media titles, you’re always on the lookout for pieces that could feel right within our pages.

You’re willing to take calculated risks and are as comfortable driving success as you are pulling the plug on efforts that don’t deliver expected results.

Deadlines matter to you.

Your day-to-day:
  • You work with the Head of Editorial to steer the print magazine, top-editing all copy and working with various Editorial Operations teams to ensure timely delivery of files to the printer
  • You leverage your own skills as a writer and editor — from display copy to reporting
  • You assign freelance writing assignments and mentor and collaborate with the other editors
  • You liaise with the ad and marketing teams to generate creative ideas for partnership opportunities and ensure that all branded and native content feels true to the standards and style of Reader’s Digest editorial
  • You collaborate with Reader’s Digest’s Art and Creative teams on feature concepts and cross-surface executions
  • You drive and coordinate brand-wide franchise projects and events, in collaboration with the Head of Editorial
  You have:
  • A bachelor’s degree in Journalism, English or Communications
  • 10+ years of experience in editorial roles, with a lead-by-example mindset
  • Demonstrated success in building and maintaining positive cross-functional relationships and driving big projects to launch
  • Experience copy editing and/or top editing reported stories for a trusted journalistic outlet
  • An organized, thorough and deadline-oriented approach to working with an ability to recognize when a content product or experience is ready to move forward
  • Experience with content production tools such as InCopy/InDesign, as well as using analytics reports from platforms such as Google Analytics to measure the impact of content
  • Experience in the realm of video and social content production. An understanding of the workback and editing needs for custom shoots
