Job Description

The Maintenance Technician plays a key role in maintaining, troubleshooting, and repairing the High Line's unique infrastructural elements, including mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems. From HVAC and LED lighting to irrigation pumps, the park's signature water feature, and its wood decking and furniture, this position keeps the systems that millions of annual visitors experience running safely and seamlessly. Day to day, the Technician conducts rounds and readings of mechanical areas, completes and tracks work orders, and responds quickly as issues arise. This is hands-on, largely outdoor work across all four seasons in a highly visited public space, where the Technician interacts regularly with staff, volunteers, and the public.

This position reports to the Senior Maintenance Manager. This is a full-time, year-round, non-exempt position with an hourly rate of $30.

Requirements

Infrastructure Maintenance & Repair

  • Perform maintenance and repair on specialized infrastructure elements, including HVAC, LED lighting, electrical distribution for events, irrigation pumps, a specialized water feature, bathroom fixtures, security gates and cameras, elevators, fire alarms, small gas-powered and electric equipment, wood park furniture and decking, concrete structure and pavers, and painted steel
  • Conduct daily rounds and readings of mechanical areas
  • Troubleshoot and maintain the water feature and its components, including pumps, filters, actuators, strainers, and UV systems; monitor chemical levels; and conduct spring and fall seasonal preparation

Equipment & Tools

  • Troubleshoot, maintain, repair, and calibrate small gas-powered equipment such as snow blowers, lawn mowers, and power washers
  • Operate and maintain tools including drills, grinders, welders, table saws, and air compressors
  • Safely operate all tools and equipment in compliance with federal, state, and local safety requirements, including trucks, electric vehicles, specialized equipment, small power equipment, and hand tools
  • Use proper personal protective equipment (PPE) including face masks, protective gloves, hard hats, and goggles

Work Order Management

  • Complete daily work orders on the custom Computerized Management System (CMS) as assigned, tracking time, resources, and materials used
  • Ensure communication is maintained on all work orders; respond to and complete work orders within 24 hours

General Operations

  • Perform other duties as assigned, including winter snow and ice removal

Ideal Experience

  • 2–4 years of relevant work experience
  • Demonstrate ability to perform a wide variety of maintenance tasks
  • Experience working with electrical systems. Including troubleshooting repairs and preventative maintenance. Involving Lighting, outlet , switches, breakers, motors in a safe manner.
  • Ability to perform a wide range of carpentry repair Including maintenance and repair of wood structures, wood planks and seating
  • Experience with power tools, small motorized equipment, and vehicles
  • Ability to use ladders, scaffolding, and/or a scissor lift while performing job duties
  • Able to work alone and in groups
  • Able to work outdoors in all weather conditions, sometimes for extended periods of time
  • Good communication skills and ability to follow oral and written instructions
  • Interacts well with staff, volunteers, and the public in a highly-visited public space
  • Valid New York State driver’s license
  • Must acquire required OSHA, FDNY certificates of fitness, and a Pool & Spa Operator certification

Abilities

  • Ability to work overtime, weekends, holidays, and on an on-call basis as needed
  • Ability to walk, reach, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, and regularly lift and/or move up to 50 lbs., and occasionally lift and/or move heavy objects in excess of 75 lbs. using proper tools and leverage methods
  • Must pass the New York City Parks Department driving assessment and safety training
