Sommelier – Indienne New York

Chef Sujan Sarkar’s acclaimed Indian dining concept, Indienne , is seeking a passionate and knowledgeable Sommelier to join our Front of House team.

The Sommelier role at Indienne New York is a hands-on service position that works closely with management, Front of House, and Back of House teams. This role is responsible for maintaining and executing a thoughtful wine program aligned with the restaurant’s standards, while ensuring wine and beverage service is delivered at the highest level.

We are building a beverage program with clear intention—focused on thoughtful pairings that enhance the guest experience and complement the cuisine.

This role is ideal for someone who combines technical wine knowledge with genuine hospitality, strong leadership, and a passion for service excellence.

Key Responsibilities
  • Maintain and evolve a wine list that reflects the philosophy and direction of the restaurant
  • Execute precise and thoughtful wine and beverage service
  • Partner with management to train and educate service staff on the wine program
  • Keep the team informed of updates and changes to the beverage list
  • Assist with inventory management, including receiving deliveries, verifying invoices, and organizing the beverage storeroom
  • Support daily operational needs, including movement of wine and spirits across service areas

The Sommelier works closely with management to conduct ongoing training for service staff and ensure the team remains up to date on all changes to the wine program. This role also supports operational responsibilities related to inventory, organization, and beverage service execution.

Essential Duties Wine Program
  • Maintain a beverage list that aligns with management and ownership goals
  • Maintain physical beverage menus for both bar and dining room
  • Maximize profitability through sales mix, margin awareness, and inventory control
  • Maintain awareness of inventory counts, product shortages, and service pivots in coordination with management
  • Keep the wine list current with market trends and guest preferences
Staff Training
  • Train and mentor staff to maximize revenue through product knowledge and service standards
  • Conduct and participate in routine trainings covering pronunciation, origin, grape varietals, and producer knowledge
  • Train staff on wine service and wine pairings
  • Ensure staff is informed of all additions and removals from the list
  • Communicate effectively with dining room and bar teams
Inventory & Storage
  • Maintain an organized and clean beverage storeroom
  • Ensure all alcoholic beverage deliveries are properly checked in
  • Verify beverage invoices as needed
  • Ensure products are stored promptly and correctly
  • Order all alcoholic beverages except beer
  • Conduct regular inventory in coordination with Bar Staff and Beverage Director
  • Ensure all security controls and storage procedures are followed
  • Update wines in POS as necessary
  • Maintain POS beverage inventory accuracy
Service
  • Lead wine sales and beverage service with a strong focus on guest engagement and wine selections
  • Interact with guests confidently and provide thoughtful recommendations
  • Assist service staff with wine service when appropriate
  • Ensure proper beverage service standards are consistently maintained
  • Monitor wine service and train according to service standards
  • Support all beverage-related tasks within the dining room as needed
Competencies & Qualifications
  • 1–3 years of experience in a similar role within fine dining preferred
  • Strong wine knowledge with a passion for continued learning
  • Sommelier certification preferred but not required
  • Strong knowledge of food and beverage pairings
  • Positive and clear written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to perform well in a team-oriented environment
  • Strong guest engagement and relationship-building skills
  • Professional presence with impeccable grooming and presentation
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Active commitment to hospitality and service excellence
Physical Demands

This role requires standing and moving for extended periods of time, frequent bending and reaching, and lifting up to 25 pounds regularly and up to 50 pounds occasionally, with or without reasonable accommodation.
